In 2012, the Metropolitan Area Youth Symphony of Orlando and the Central Florida Youth Orchestra of Leesburg joined forces to form the Metropolitan Area Youth Symphonies of Orlando and Lake County!

MAYS of Orlando will continue to rehearse as usual at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando in Downtown Orlando, while MAYS of Lake County will rehearse on the same days and times as the CFYO had always done at Lake-Sumter Community College.

Though the rehearsals and most performance throughout the year for both orchestras will be separate, the 2012-2013 Season will culminate in a combined performance at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre in Orlando.

This season also marks the beginning of MAYS At Your School, with St. Paul’s Catholic School and Gateway Christian School partnering with the MAYS to bring the youth orchestra experience into their classrooms and to many more students in Central Florida.

Many good things are afoot for the Metropolitan Area Youth Symphony, and its Artistic and Administrative staffs wish to thank all the students, parents, and community members that made it possible.

METROPOLITAN AREA YOUTH SYMPHONY FORMED IN WINTER PARK
Maureen May and Michael Miller Continue the Legacy of Jonathan May

Winter Park, FL - As Artistic Directors of the newly-formed Metropolitan Area Youth Symphony (MAYS), Maureen May and Michael Miller are working together to ensure the musical legacy begun by conductor, friend, and honorary founder, Jonathan May.

Mrs. May and Mr. Miller will define educational requirements for their students based on national standards, conduct and select music for each ensemble, and teach students orchestral methods and nuances.  Mrs. May and Mr. Miller bring with them decades of experience teaching and leading young music students, and seek to continue the momentum began by its honorary founder.

Mrs. May is music director at Millennium Middle School, teaches strings at Trinity Preparatory School, plays cello in the Orlando Philharmonic and Bach Festival, and has maintained a private studio for over twenty-five years.  Mr. Miller has been the Director of Music Activities at the Geneva School and was Associate Conductor of Mr. May’s orchestra since August, 2000.

Entering its Inaugural Season, the mission of the MAYS is to provide a well-rounded musical education that honors the memory of lifelong teacher, conductor, and honorary founder, Jonathan May.

The 2010-2011 Inaugural Season features five orchestras at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, with many other musical opportunities including music theory, composition, professional recitals, and workshops to be offered to students between the ages of five and twenty-two years old.
